On the eve of the Fourth of July, a celebration at the New Seabury Country Club on Cape Cod took a dangerous turn when an explosion occurred during the setup of a fireworks display. NBC Boston reports that around 4:37 p.m. yesterday, multiple explosions injured at least two individuals, prompting an expansive emergency response. One person sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital, while another was transported to Falmouth Hospital with minor injuries.
Eight individuals were examined by medical teams following the accident. Massachusetts State Police and various local fire departments quickly responded to the scene. A vehicle offloading fireworks materials caught fire, leading to the sequence of explosions. According to a Boston 25 News interview, an eyewitness described the situation as "a little unnerving," citing the intensity and duration of the explosions.
Pyrotecnico, the company responsible for the fireworks setup, stated that a shell ignited prematurely during setup, which subsequently caused the gathered cases to explode. Representatives from the State Fire Marshal's Office, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, the FBI Bomb Squad, and OSHA also arrived to investigate the incident. The mishap caused the country club to cancel the planned fireworks show, though other festivities continued as scheduled.
Video from the scene showed fireworks detonating in rapid succession as a sizable plume of smoke rose above the golf course. "The frequency of the explosions was just pop, pop, pop," Tabitha Carty told Boston 25 News. "It was pretty obvious that something was not right." The country club's general manager extended an apology to members for the inconvenience, noting a focus on the injured persons and the ongoing investigation.
