Residents and visitors of Portland's Central Eastside can expect to adjust their parking routines starting next week. New on-street pay-to-park hours are rolling out on August 1, with parking meters demanding payment from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday, according to a recent announcement by the city's transportation bureau.
The move to extend parking hours is a response to the Portland Bureau of Transportation's (PBOT) annual data review, which reflected an increasing demand for parking space across the city. With a vibrant culture beckoning people towards events, dining, and retail therapy, the struggle for parking space is real, and it's evident that Portland is seeking a way to improve turnover and access to parking for patrons of local businesses.
This change is especially beneficial for night-time enterprises. "Extending on-street pay-to-park hours will provide more turnover and customer parking for local businesses, particularly restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues that are open late into the evening," the Portland Bureau of Transportation stated.
Parking reform is not stopping here, though. The plan, as laid out by the city, is a phased approach with updates to signage and enforcement procedures happening district-by-district. The next zone on the schedule is the downtown parking district, where new hours begin on Sept. 2, 2025. Community members within each district will be duly notified prior to the changes taking effect, easing the transition and minimizing surprises.
Portland's approach follows a trend in urban areas, where managing parking resources becomes increasingly strategic as cities grow and evolve. While the change may require an adjustment period for regular patrons of Central Eastside's late-night scene, it represents a step towards addressing the challenges of a thriving urban area.
