A tragic incident occurred on the July 4th weekend as a father and son from the Chicago suburbs drowned in Lake Michigan, near Indiana Dunes National Park. According to a news release by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, conservation officers responded to a water rescue around 4:20 p.m. on Saturday near Dunes Acres. The victims were later identified by officials as David Meneou, 65, of Joliet, and his son Jameson Meneou, 20, of Lockport.
The effort to reach the incident site was intensified due to its remoteness, which necessitated the use of off-road vehicles and a patrol boat. By the time the officers arrived at the scene, a good Samaritan had already pulled both men from the water. Despite immediate attempts to rapidly transport and revive the victims by boat to the Port of Indiana while administering CPR, the father and son were pronounced dead.
As reported by ABC 7 Chicago, the drownings occurred at Boaters Beach in Burns Harbor, Indiana. "Preliminary investigation reveals both were in the water when Jameson Meneou went into deep water and began to struggle," the IDNR stated. "David Meneou attempted to rescue his son but also began to struggle in the deep water." The Porter County Coroner confirmed the identities of the deceased.
The incident continues to remain under investigation, and further details have not been made available at this time. This heartbreaking loss is a grim reminder of the unforeseen dangers that can arise even during leisurely activities and the importance of water safety. The community mourns for the Meneou family as they face this devastating reality.
