A former Boston science teacher has been indicted for exploitation of a minor. John Magee Gavin, 35, of Brookline, was charged with coercion and enticement of a minor, receipt of child pornography, and possession of child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Gavin, a teacher, is in state custody and faces charges after a review of his online activity revealed attempts to solicit sexually explicit material from at least one underage girl. Authorities allege he used his position to legitimize inappropriate communications with minors. He is scheduled to appear in federal court in Boston on July 21. Investigators reportedly found 147 files of child sexual abuse material on his iPhone, with content involving minors as young as five. He also allegedly engaged in sexualized conversations with minors on Discord, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
As part of Project Safe Childhood, authorities are addressing child exploitation, and Gavin’s case is one example under investigation. U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley noted the cooperation between federal and local law enforcement. The public is encouraged to share any helpful information by calling 617-748-3274 or emailing [email protected]. Gavin faces charges that carry possible sentences ranging from five years to life in prison, but he is presumed innocent until proven guilty, as stated by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
