A former Franklin priest has been sentenced to seven years in state prison after pleading guilty to a multitude of sexual misconduct charges involving minors and adults. Juan Carlos Garcia-Mendoza, previously assigned to St. Philip Catholic Church, faced a grim reckoning for his crimes upon entering a guilty plea arrangement, as WKRN reported.
Williamson County District Attorney General Stacey B. Edmonson disclosed that Garcia-Mendoza was indicted by a grand jury in 2024 on charges that included continuous sexual abuse of a child and aggravated sexual battery. The occurrences, equally disturbing and numerous, encompassed four counts of sexual battery by an authority figure, and two counts of sexual battery, as stated by WSMV.
In addition to the prison sentence, the former cleric will be listed on the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry. Court documents state that Garcia-Mendoza "cannot have contact with the victims and will relinquish his role as a priest within the Roman Catholic Church." Following his incarceration, he must endure a lifetime of community supervision, according to WKRN.
The investigation, spearheaded by Franklin Police Department detective Andrea Clark, proved instrumental in bringing Garcia-Mendoza to justice. A post by the Franklin Police Department shed light on a superseding indictment brought forth on June 5 by the Williamson County Grand Jury, which added two additional counts of sexual battery to Garcia-Mendoza's charges. The Diocese of Nashville, along with the St. Philip Catholic Church, aided in the investigation, but as events have unearthed, the fortress of trust once surrounding Garcia-Mendoza has crumbled into inexorable pieces of betrayal and tragedy, shared in a statement by the Franklin Police Department.

The case carries on under the scrutiny of the 21st Judicial District Office of the District Attorney General while the door has closed on Garcia-Mendoza's tenure with the church and his freedom. Community members or those with further information on the case have been urged to reach out to Detective Clark, with resources for victims provided by the District Attorney's office, noted in the statement from Franklin Police Department.
