A former high school custodian's future became decidedly grim as District Judge John A. Ross sentenced him to a five-year stint in prison for possessing child pornography. Bernard Ray Mennemeier, whose employment within the halls where youth abound makes the case all the more unsettling, is now facing 63 hard months behind bars, per an official statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Eastern District of Missouri.
The legal odyssey began when Mennemeier chose to upload five videos replete with child sexual abuse materials to Dropbox. These actions did not go unnoticed, swiftly triggering an FBI inquiry into the depth of his online activities. It was through a court-sanctioned search that both his Dropbox and home were scrutinized, revealing possession of not only child pornography, but child erotica as well. According to the plea agreement, Mennemeier, admitted to messaging someone on Twitter who sold him the reprehensible material "numerous" times.
In the aftermath, not only is Mennemeier destined for a lengthy incarceration, but post-release, his movements will be checked by a lifetime of supervised release. Special Agent in Charge Chris Crocker of the FBI St. Louis Division emphasized the gravity of the situation in a statement: "In addition to spending 63 months in federal prison, Mennemeier will never be allowed to work around children again because he will have to register as a sex offender." The stain of these convictions and the label of a sex offender he must now don, leaving an indelible mark on what remains of his societal freedoms, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The FBI, which spearheaded the investigation,, shouldered the weighty responsibility of uncovering the digital fingerprints that would lead to Mennemeier's downfall. This case is but a single stain in the nationwide effort to cleanse the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse known as Project Safe Childhood. Since its inception in May 2006, the DOJ has been at the forefront of this initiative, leveraging all manner of federal, state, and local resources to both bring perpetrators to justice and rescue the innocent victims caught in this most sinister web of deceit.
