In a tragic unfolding of events, four individuals were killed and at least 14 others were injured in a drive-by mass shooting outside the Artis Restaurant and Lounge in Chicago's River North neighborhood. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, among the deceased were Devonte Williamson, 23, and Taylor Walker, 26, both of whom were connected to rapper Mello Buckzz, whose album release party at the venue was concluding when the violence erupted.
The CBS News Chicago report highlighted that the shooting was a targeted attack, mentioning that some victims were part of Mello Buckzz's inner circle. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling conveyed the indiscriminate nature of the shooting, stating, "They didn't care who was struck, and in a matter of seconds they were able to shoot 18 people." To enact further precautions, the city has temporarily closed the Artis Lounge while the investigation continues. In response to the incident and in fear of possible retaliation, Snelling declared the police's readiness to "making sure we are keeping the city safe and protecting lives."
The heartbroken communities have begun to gather, seeking consolation and remembrance. Andrea Williamson, mother of Devonte Williamson, spoke of the videos circulating on social media showing "people running, and they are constantly shooting." She added in an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, "To do that to people — the majority of them were women — to take people’s loved ones away, they need to be locked up." Meanwhile, Sharonda Booth mourned the loss of her daughter, Taylor Walker, who worked as a hairdresser and was among the casualties. "I know I can't question God," Booth said. "I know he must have a better plan for her."
Adding to the narrative of loss, Mayor Brandon Johnson made a public call for action. "We will not rest until there is full accountability. I'm calling on any Chicagoan who has any information about these mass shootings, we are calling on anyone who has information to come forward," Johnson stated, as noted in CBS News Chicago. Mello Buckzz, meanwhile, took to social media to share her grief, posting tributes to Williamson and the other victims, writing "Feel like everything just weighing down on me ... all I can do is talk to god and pray."
The tragedy marks yet another instance of gun violence touching Chicago, with the same location previously targeted in November 2022 when it was known as Hush Lounge. In the face of this latest outpour of bullets and bloodshed, communities clamor for peace and justice, with violence interrupters taking to the streets and flyers seeking tips about the shooting being posted throughout the neighborhood.
