Georgia's Department of Corrections just appointed a new leader at Wilcox State Prison. Micheal Thomas, the current Warden at Dodge State Prison, will assume his new role overseeing staff and around 1,833 male inmates at Wilcox SP starting July 16, as announced by GDC Commissioner Tyrone Oliver on Thursday. According to the official statement released by the Georgia Department of Corrections, Thomas' correctional experience and leadership skills earned him the new position.

According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, Commissioner Oliver is quoted expressing his confidence in Thomas' capabilities, "Micheal has worked his way up through the ranks, always leading by example," and further adds, "We are proud to have him as a part of our team and are confident that his correctional knowledge will continue to prove valuable to the mission and staff at Wilcox SP." His career in corrections began in 2010 and has been marked by a series of promotions reflecting his growth and commitment to the field.

Michael Thomas' journey with the Department started at Macon State Prison, where he served as a Counselor. His career trajectory has been steadily upward, from a promotion to Chief Counselor at Central State Prison in 2013, to becoming Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment two years later. His appointment as Superintendent of McEver Probation Detention Center came in 2022, followed by a leap to Warden at Dodge SP in 2024.

Thomas brings with him an educational background in criminal justice from Campbellsville University and a plethora of departmental training, including Basic Correctional Officer Training, Basic Counselor Training, Basic Management Training, Deputy Warden’s Academy, Sexual Assault Response Team, and Warden’s Pre-Command. His broad spectrum of training and experience is expected to be an asset in managing the complex operations of Wilcox State Prison. The transition comes at a critical time as prison systems nationwide continue to navigate the challenges of reform and inmate management.
