The Georgia high school football scene is in mourning following the passing of T. McFerrin, a coach who left an indelible mark on the state's athletics. McFerrin died at age 83 after a storied career that spanned several decades. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, funeral services are set for the revered coach this Tuesday afternoon in Monroe, Georgia.
This week, friends, family, and the football community will have to come together to honor a figure who was more than just a coach – he was a mentor and a motivator for many. According to a statement obtained by WSB-TV, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences, emphasizing that McFerrin's "impact will not only live on through his incredible record, but even more so through the generations of athletes who stepped off of his field as better men because of his influence."
McFerrin's accolades include winning 341 games and two state championships during his 38-year coaching span. Beyond these remarkable achievements, McFerrin is known to have influenced countless lives beyond the football field. He is the only coach in Georgia history to have led four different teams to the state finals, a testament to his formidable coaching abilities and leadership.
McFerrin's legacy extends well past his tactical know-how; he is remembered for his respect and love for everyone around him. "Dad always treated everyone, whether it was managers, custodians, players, parents, administration, or media, with the same respect and love," Thomas "Tom" Sumner McFerrin V, McFerrin's son, told FOX 5 Atlanta in an interview.
Those wishing to honor McFerrin's memory can do so at the Lighthouse World Outreach Center on Tuesday, or by making a donation to Monroe First Methodist Church, the Christian Learning Center, or the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as suggested by the family. The reception will follow at Monroe First Methodist Church, as noted in the announcement.
