In an act of swift and selfless service, Glendale Police Officer Jose Torres took a literal plunge to save the life of a scared puppy. The episode unfolded last Wednesday evening, by a canal in Arizona, when a seven-month-old French poodle mix named Itachi inadvertently fell into the water near 75th Avenue and Camelback Road. As reported by FOX 10 Phoenix, the determined officer shed his gear and dove into the canal after firmly deciding to rescue the distressed animal.
The urgency of the situation was palpable, as the owners and a group of people looked on in sheer panic. "We see the group of people, the owners kind of all hysterical. I told him, 'I'm going to jump in the canal, save the dog,'" Torres recounted in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. Demonstrating his readiness, the officer not only removed his vest but also his belt, under belt, and boots before diving into the water. Aided by a park ranger's broom, Itachi was eventually heaved to safety.
Captured footage of the daring rescue showcased both the tension and the collective will to save the canine. A post by Glendale police on Facebook, detailed by AZ Central, displayed how individuals at the scene assisted with flashlights, while other officers were readying to help. One woman's voice, shrouded in apprehension, narrated the dog's futile attempts to escape the canal's grasp over the 911 call.
Triumph mixed with palpable relief marked the successful rescue, as Officer Torres, wet but undeterred, handed Itachi back to Yisel Mugarra Santana, the dog's owner. "It scared me because I thought something bad might happen to the officer. And so after he jumped, it filled me with so much joy that I hugged the officer," Mugarra Santana told FOX 10 Phoenix, her voice echoing the gratitude of someone who had just witnessed a beloved family member saved from peril. Officer Torres, with the composure and humility characteristic of those who serve and protect, mentioned he wouldn't hesitate to repeat his actions if presented with similar circumstances.
