A 23-year-old man from Greenfield, identified as Kalebe Mmangyu, is facing serious allegations after an incident at a New Palestine gas station, where he is accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. aA reported by FOX59, Mmangyu, who is charged with public intoxication and a Level 5 felony for sexual misconduct with a minor, was found with a .203 blood-alcohol content, accompanied by physical signs of intoxication including "bloodshot and glossy" eyes and poor balance according to the court documents.
On June 28, New Palestine police responded to a disturbance call at a Speedway gas station, shortly after arresting Mmangyu; The Greenfield Reporter detailed an intoxicated Mmangyu exhibiting resistance when approached by the police, who had walked away from the gas station later being subdued by officers after he displayed what were called "furtive movements," and due to the language barrier, officers had to establish his identity using a U.S. Employment Authorization card.
Security footage provided crucial evidence, showing Mmangyu approaching the victim, grabbing her wrist, and then making inappropriate contact with both her breast and buttocks, WIBC reports. The victim and her friend managed to escape the situation, retreating to a McDonald's bathroom across from the Speedway and calling 911 for help. A preliminary trial for Mmangyu has been scheduled for July 30, and he remains detained at Hancock County Jail on a $50,000 surety bond.
