The National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook and a Heat Advisory for the Minneapolis region, underscoring the potential severity of the coming days' weather conditions. As the mercury is set to soar, with forecasts predicting a high near 92 degrees and heat index values as high as 96, residents are urged to take precautionary measures against the ensuing heat.
Scheduled to remain in effect from noon to 8 PM CDT Tuesday, the Heat Advisory warns of potential heat index values reaching up to 98. "Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses," the advisory warns, calling on the public to "drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors." Beyond the oppressive heat, an aggressive weather pattern looms, bringing with it a "chance of showers and thunderstorms," some of which may become severe with "large hail and damaging wind gusts" as the primary threats, as per the National Weather Service's Hazardous Weather Outlook.
Residents are further advised to brace for substantial rainfall, which could give rise to flooding in some areas. The Weather Service forecasts place chances of precipitation each day, highlighting that "new rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible" tonight alone. The outlook suggests a short reprieve mid-week, with a cloudy Wednesday leading to eventual clearing skies Thursday evening and sunny conditions returning by the following day.
Given these conditions, the Weather Service has stated that SKYWARN spotter activation may be needed, a nod to the potential for these thunderstorms to escalate. While looking ahead to the remainder of the week, the forecast notes "a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms" by Friday night, remaining a concern into early Saturday. Residents planning outdoor activities during this period should prepare for altered conditions and remain vigilant for sudden weather changes.
