A fatal crash in Rapides Parish has claimed the life of a Hessmer man on Monday afternoon. According to Louisiana State Police Troop E, the collision occurred around 4:42 p.m. on U.S. Highway 71 at Bill Warner Road when a 2009 Toyota Camry, driven by 29-year-old Michael Dauzat Jr., was attempting to cross the northbound lanes to access a service road and collided with a 1993 Chevrolet Caprice.
The impact was severe resulting in Mr. Dauzat sustaining injuries that led to his death after being transported to a local hospital; the question of whether he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash has yet to be answered, however, the driver of the Caprice who was using a restraint, sustained moderate injuries and received hospital treatment. In the aftermath of the crash troopers collected routine toxicology samples and these have been submitted for analysis while they continue to probe into the underlying causes of the tragic event.
While the exact reasons that led Dauzat to veer across the oncoming traffic lanes are still under investigation, state police have reiterated their previous cautions about the dangers of distracted and inattentive driving. In the face of such incidents, Louisiana State Police urge all motorists to stay vigilant and maintain full attention on the road, reminding the public that "a lapse in one’s awareness can have deadly consequences." This crash has once again highlighted the ever-present risks on our roads and the fine line between a safe journey and a fatal misstep.
