On Wednesday, July 23, a Honduran national, Darwin Xavier Gonzalez-Munoz, was sentenced to 24 months in prison for illegal re-entry into the United States, Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced. According to court documents, Gonzalez-Munoz, age 30, had been previously deported and was found to have re-entered the country without authorization on or about June 24, 2024.
This case arrives in the midst of "Operation Take Back America," a sweeping federal initiative that aims to combat illegal immigration and dismantle transnational criminal organizations. These efforts are spearheaded by the Department of Justice, which, through this initiative, intends to, protect American communities from various criminal activities. Indeed, this particular sentencing is just the latest outcome of this broader governmental agenda.
United States District Judge Lance M. Africk presided over the sentencing of Gonzalez-Munoz, with the case falling under the jurisdiction of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a). The charge specifically concerns the illegal re-entry of a removed alien into the country, a violation that has been increasingly targeted under current federal enforcement policies.
In his public address, Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson lauded the efforts of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Enforcement Removal Operations in apprehending Gonzalez-Munoz. Simpson's praise was echoed by Assistant United States Attorney Mary Katherine Kaufman of the General Crimes Unit, who prosecuted the case.
