In a harrowing incident that escalated from a domestic disturbance to an officer-involved shooting, Indianapolis police responded to a report of a person shot early Thursday morning. On arrival at the 4800 block of N Ritter Avenue, police found an adult female with gunshot wound(s). She was transported to the hospital and was later pronounced deceased, according to an IMPD News social media post.
The suspect fled the crime scene in a vehicle and was spotted by officers from IMPD's North District. A pursuit ensued where the suspect stopped multiple times, firing shots at the officers, hitting at least two police vehicles. Details provided by IMPD News revealed that "the suspect eventually exited the vehicle in the 900 block of W 32nd Street and pointed a rifle in the direction of officers." This confrontation led to the officer-involved shooting, after which the suspect was given first aid and transported to a hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced deceased.
As is protocol, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, and the Police Officer Support Team (POST) and the IMPD Chaplain’s Office were dispatched to provide support for those involved. A separate administrative investigation is underway by IMPD Internal Affairs. The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team is handling the criminal investigation, and detectives believe there is no further threat to the community as there is no suspect outstanding.
Forensic evidence is being collected by the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency, while the Marion County Coroner’s Office assists with determining the cause of death. IMPD News confirmed that "officers were equipped with body-worn cameras, which were activated during this incident." Information regarding the suspect's identity will be disclosed once next-of-kin notifications have been made.
