Major changes are coming to early childhood literacy in Jacksonville. Mayor Donna Deegan, in partnership with former Mayor John Peyton, has announced a $1 million investment from the Gate Foundation to expand book access for the city's preschoolers. The announcement detailed reinventing Peyton's initial book initiative into what's now called The Mayor's Book Club, as reported by the City of Jacksonville's official website.
This financial infusion will allow every four-year-old in Jacksonville to quickly receive a free book monthly. The program aims to emphasize school readiness and instill an early affinity for reading. The Kids Hope Alliance will administer the program, and information on sign-up procedures will be forthcoming. Speaking at City Hall, Mayor Deegan expressed that “When John launched his book club nearly two decades ago, he planted a powerful seed. Today, we’re helping that seed grow into something extraordinary—fueling imagination, curiosity, and literacy for thousands of children across Jacksonville,” as detailed on the City of Jacksonville's news release.
Deegan's current literary push through the River City Readers initiative has seen a significant impact, with over 3 million minutes of reading tallied across Jacksonville. The program also boasts a bookmobile operation, a literal vehicle of learning, driving progress throughout the city, marked by third-grade reading scores in Duval County now surpassing 50%.
"This is more than just a book club. It's a bridge between administrations and a bipartisan investment in something that transcends politics: our children’s future,” said Deegan, noting the broader significance of this initiative. Former Mayor Peyton shared a similar sentiment in his acknowledgment of the program's potential impact, stating, "I’ve always believed in the power of books to change lives. By bringing this club back and expanding its reach, we are sending a powerful message: Every child in Jacksonville deserves the chance to discover the joy of reading," as per the City of Jacksonville's news release.
