The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) is currently investigating a fatal incident that occurred yesterday in South Knoxville. A motorcyclist, whose identity has yet to be revealed, died following a collision with a pickup truck, according to a statement obtained by WVLT.
Responding to the scene at the intersection of Chapman Highway and Woodlawn Pike just before 11:30 p.m., KPD officers found that the motorcycle had crashed into the back of a stationary pickup truck, which was reportedly stopped at a traffic light. As reported by WATE, KPD believes that the motorcyclist was "speeding south on Chapman Highway" when they collided with the truck.
The motorcyclist was swiftly transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center but was subsequently pronounced dead. Further details regarding the identity of the deceased or the condition of the pickup truck driver have not been disclosed at this time. WBIR shared similar information, noting witness statements that corroborate the theory of high-speed travel leading up to the crash.
KPD's crash reconstruction investigators were dispatched to thoroughly examine the scene as part of leading the ongoing investigation. The department aims to piece together the details to fully understand how this tragedy unfolded. Scott Erland with KPD commented on the accident, saying, "The motorcyclist was transported to UT Medical Center and later died," demonstrating the grave consequences of the incident, as mentioned in the WVLT report. Updates on the investigation will be shared as new information becomes available.
