Travelers in Vermilion Parish will need to adjust their routes, as LA 35 undergoes significant roadwork for a new drainage system installation. The closure, which is set to affect a stretch of LA 35 just 0.8 miles north of its intersection with LA 92, began last Tuesday, at 7 a.m. and is set to continue until this Monday, at 5 p.m., provided the weather cooperates.
The Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has indicated that the temporary inconvenience is necessary for the installation of "new drainage structures across LA 35" according to an official announcement. To not so much inconvenience drivers, detours have been arranged to facilitate the flow of traffic around the construction area. Southbound travelers are to be rerouted via LA 342, east to LA 700, south to LA 92, and then west back to LA 35. Conversely, those heading north will need to take LA 92 east to LA 700, travel north to LA 342, and then head west to rejoin LA 35.
Signage prominently displaying the detour routes is posted to assist drivers navigating around the closure. However, it's essential to note that emergency vehicles will not be able to access the area during the duration of the closure, which may affect response times in local emergencies.
As crews and heavy equipment will be present on-site, Department of Transportation and Development is urging motorists "to please drive with caution and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment," as safety for both the workers and drivers is a paramount concern during such operations. The department also extends its gratitude for the public's patience as they work to quickly and safely complete the necessary improvements to LA 35's infrastructure.
