A 33-year-old man, Alejandro Rodriguez Hernandez, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Alexis Sanchez Azcuy, as reported by FOX 7 Austin. The conviction, which also includes a 20-year sentence for abuse of a corpse, was delivered by a Winkler County jury on July 16, 2025. Azcuy's abandoned truck had flagged off a widespread investigation in March 2022 after it was found in West Texas.
Sanchez Azcuy, a 48-year-old commercial vehicle driver, had been reported missing, which led to the discovery of his scattered remains across Winkler County, Texas, and Lea County, New Mexico. Rodriguez Hernandez was initially arrested on July 11, 2022, in Hobbs, New Mexico, for tampering with evidence. The charges were later upgraded to murder and abuse of a corpse, with the suspect being extradited to Texas for trial. According to a statement obtained by My Texas Daily, FBI El Paso Special Agent in Charge John Morales said, "Thanks to the relentless, tireless work of our FBI agents in the Midland Resident Agency and our committed partners with the Texas Rangers, Hernandez was found, prosecuted, and guaranteed to never harm another person in our community again."
The case emphasized the critical nature of interagency cooperation. Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) West Texas Region Chief Jose Sanchez highlighted, "Thanks to the strong partnerships the Texas Department of Public Safety has at the local, state and federal level, Ramon Alejandro Rodriguez Hernandez won’t be a threat to the public ever again," as mentioned by FOX 7 Austin.
Winkler County District Attorney Amanda Navarette expressed relief over the conviction, noting, "Alexis Sanchez Azcuy was brutally murdered and dismembered, his family had to endure months of distress while he was missing and navigate the long process of the identification of his remains." She further stated that the swift verdict and sentence by the Winkler County jurors sent "a clear message that violent, heinous crimes will not be tolerated," as described by Fox 7 Austin. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information related to the case to contact the DPS District Office in Midland at (432) 498-2130.
