Angelo Rickey Smith, 21, of Macomb County, entered a no contest plea to charges including second-degree homicide after a 2021 police chase that led to a fatal crash. Police said Smith was involved in stealing vehicles from a dealership in Washington Township. During the chase, he drove over 130 miles per hour and ran a red light on 15 Mile Road, crashing into two vehicles and killing 20-year-old Emmon Woods, according to Audacy.
Prosecutor Pete Lucido in a statement obtained by FOX 2 Detroit emphasized the need for consequences, saying, "Here, a young man stole a vehicle and then made the decision to flee from the police which resulted in the death of an innocent young woman whose life was just ahead of her. There must be consequences to stop this behavior before it ends up with these tragic results."
After a deadly crash involving Angelo Rickey Smith, who was 17 at the time, Michigan Senator Lucido is supporting a bill that would require mandatory prison time for people who flee from police. “Every time someone runs, they roll the dice with innocent lives. I want to end that gamble,” Lucido said in an interview with CBS News Detroit. Smith is facing several charges, including second-degree homicide, fleeing and eluding police, breaking and entering, and larceny. His sentencing is scheduled for September 4.
