The stretch of Loop 101, known to locals as the Agua Fria Freeway, is bracing for a major change. To broaden the highway to accommodate more traffic, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced the closure of two major ramps set to begin late this July.
Beginning at 11:30 p.m. on Monday, the eastbound Loop 101 off-ramp at 51st Avenue will close for approximately two months, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). Less than ten miles away, the eastbound off-ramp at 27th Avenue is also scheduled to close for the same duration. Both closures are part of a broader highway widening project and are expected to impact daily commutes by redirecting traffic to alternate routes.
In place of the closed ramps, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) recommends alternate routes. Drivers headed to 51st Avenue should exit at 59th Avenue and use Beardsley Road or Union Hills Drive to reach their destination. Those traveling to 27th Avenue are advised to exit at 35th Avenue and follow the same detour options. ADOT anticipates increased traffic during morning and evening rush hours but aims to minimize disruptions as part of the ongoing freeway expansion project.
ADOT has stated that project timelines are subject to change due to factors such as weather conditions, resource availability, or unexpected complications. The agency will provide ongoing updates and advise drivers to check for the latest information to plan their routes accordingly. The closures are part of a larger infrastructure improvement effort aimed at enhancing long-term traffic flow in the area.
