Last Wednesday, on July 9, authorities at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport went into high-alert mode after receiving reports of a security breach. According to a statement released by the Atlanta Police Department, a 911 caller alerted the Airport Operations Center of a man seen cutting through a fence and encroaching on the air operations area.
The response was swift, with a mix of resources including the Atlanta Police Department's Airport Special Response Team, K-9 Officers, and airport operations personnel working in tandem to locate the intruder. Despite the chaotic potential of such a situation, the suspect was discovered by an airport maintenance employee, hiding in the grass near one of the runways. An air-stop was promptly declared for the affected runway, but flights resumed shortly after the man, now identified as Kevin Peters, was in custody, and the tools used to breach the perimeter were found.
Mr. Peters now faces multiple charges covering a spectrum of infractions: Criminal Trespass, Interference with Government Property, Possession of Tools During the Commission of a Crime, Giving a False Name, Criminal Damage to Property in the Second Degree, and an outstanding warrant from the Walton County Sheriff's Office. The Department of Aviation buttressed these proceedings with additional charges related to property damage at the Airport's address, as detailed by the Atlanta Police Department.
This incident, fortunately, resulted in no injuries or prolonged interruptions to airport services. All suspects, including Mr. Peters are, until proven guilty by the law of the land, presumed innocent.
