Yesterday, a pedestrian strolling along the westbound lanes of I-580 took an unexpected turn when California Highway Patrol officers made an alarming discovery. At around 9:40 AM near the Coolidge Avenue off-ramp, officers approached a 51-year-old man, identified as Mauricio Medrano Torres, who was walking with two dogs by a large encampment. According to a social media post from CHP Oakland, the officers noticed the grip of a firearm sticking out of Torres' fanny pack during the encounter.
Torres was immediately detained, and the hidden weapon was seized without further complication. The arrest was a result of him carrying a concealed firearm, possession of an unregistered firearm, and possession of a controlled substance. Torres has since been booked into Berkeley Jail.
Initially leashed to a nearby tree, the two dogs were unharmed and are now being cared for at the Oakland Animal Shelter. The California Highway Patrol underscored their continuous mission "to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security," a statement reiterated on CHP Oakland's Facebook page in the aftermath of this incident.
