A power outage at the West Fourth Street-Washington Square station in Manhattan struck this morning, disrupting numerous subway lines. The outage, which occurred around 8:30 a.m., led to suspended service on the B and C lines and severely impacted the A, F, and M lines as well.
According to a CBS News report, Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit President, Demetrius Crichlow, indicated that a substation powering the subway and its signals tripped, with initial checks on Con Edison systems revealing no outages. "The first call that we made was to Con Edison just to see what their system was showing. At that time, they did not have any power outages," Crichlow said. He also suggested that the heat may have put additional strain on the system, a concern highlighted as the city faced high temperatures expected to reach 96 degrees.
Passengers affected by the underground disruption experienced significant delays and uncertainty. Some remained on stalled trains for long periods, with service delays reported to last up to two hours. Riders on the F line encountered irregular stop-and-go movement, with partial disembarkation followed by reboarding. "It was delayed like two hours, and we almost had to -- they told us we had to disembark, they took like half the train off, then had them come back on," an F line passenger told CBS News.
Amid rising temperatures, underground conditions added to the challenges already affecting surface transit. Demetrius Crichlow highlighted the pressure on the city's infrastructure during a news conference reported by Gothamist. "Any time there are extreme temperatures like this, it can have an impact, a strain on our system," he stated. "Without question, the infrastructure is a part of the problem."
As crews worked to resolve the outage, the MTA advised passengers to use alternate routes, including the 1, J, L, Q, N, or R trains, to avoid the affected areas. Service was expected to be restored in time for the evening rush. Commuters were advised to check the MTA’s updates for the latest information on subway service changes.
