The city of Maricopa is rolling out the canvas on streets once more, aiming to vividly splash its traffic signal boxes with an array of artistic designs. Dubbed the Traffic Signal Box Art Program, this initiative is now entering its third round, calling upon artists of all calibers to literally paint the town. Those chosen will get to transform these mundane metallic canvases into striking visual statements that beg to momentarily slow down even the most hurried pedestrian for a second look.

Artists are encouraged to boldly submit their colorful sketches for the utility boxes, which stand at either 69 or 74 inches in height, with a width of 44 inches, and a depth of 26 inches. "We're looking for vibrant colors, imaginative themes, and designs that spark community pride and surprise around every corner," according to the project announcement on the City of Maricopa website.

According to the City of Maricopa, selected designs won't just add flair to the thoroughfares but will also be featured across Maricopa's digital sprawl, gaining exposure on the city’s digital, print, and social media channels. It's a spotlight that says, in no uncertain terms, that public art deserves as much buzz as any gallery opening or museum installation. An interview with a current signal box artist highlighted the sentiment of leaving a lasting imprint on the community, a chance to "energize our streets and inspire the entire community."

Artists itching to showcase their work with the public have until 5 p.m. on Monday, September 8, to submit their designs along with their application.
