Storms Could Bring Heavy Rain And Blowing Dust
Showers and thunderstorms are possible after 11 a.m., with coverage expected to increase later Sunday. Some storms could bring strong outflow winds, blowing dust and brief heavy downpours, especially across southern Maricopa County and nearby parts of Pinal County.
The NWS Phoenix says a Flood Watch is in effect Sunday evening through late Sunday night for parts of south-central Arizona, including Central Phoenix. Localized rainfall of 1 to 2 inches or more could create dangerous runoff and flash flooding in low-lying areas, while some thunderstorms may produce wind gusts around 50 mph.
For drivers, the main concerns will be sudden visibility drops in dust, water-covered roads and fast-rising water in washes and drainage areas. Avoid crossing flooded roads, even if the water appears shallow, and be ready for storms to change plans quickly after sunset.
Monday Brings A Cooler, Still Unsettled Forecast
Monday should be noticeably cooler, with a high near 98 and another chance of showers and thunderstorms. Storms will be more scattered than Sunday's activity, but heavy rain and isolated strong winds will remain possible across the Valley.
The forecast turns quieter Tuesday, when Phoenix is expected to be sunny with a high near 101. Temperatures then rise to about 104 Wednesday and 105 Thursday, with mostly dry conditions before small storm chances return late Thursday into Friday and Saturday.
The updated flood concern adds a sharper edge to the weekend outlook previously reported by Hoodline. For now, Sunday is shaping up as a day of two very different forecasts: furnace-like heat in the afternoon, followed by the potential for a messy monsoon night.
