A driver is dead after a three-vehicle crash tore through the intersection of North 37th Avenue and West Glendale Avenue in Phoenix on Saturday afternoon, sending at least one person to the hospital with injuries that later proved fatal. No other drivers or passengers involved in the wreck were reported taken to the hospital, and the cause of the collision remains unknown.
Phoenix officers responded to a call reporting an accident with injuries near the intersection, according to ABC15 Arizona. Police told the outlet that one of the drivers was transported to a hospital and later died from injuries suffered in the crash. As of the station's report, the driver's identity had not been released, and no additional details about the other vehicles or occupants involved had surfaced.
What Investigators Still Don't Know
The cause of the three-car crash has not been determined, and it is unclear whether speed, impairment, or another factor played a role. Statewide, ADOT has flagged speed and alcohol impairment as the leading causes behind fatal collisions, with alcohol involved in more than a quarter of Arizona's fatal wrecks and 347 deaths in 2024 alone, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Arizona law also requires drivers to maintain a reasonable and prudent speed and to slow down when approaching intersections, per the Arizona State Legislature's statute on vehicle speed restrictions.
Fatal crashes within city limits typically fall to the Phoenix Police Department's Vehicular Crimes Unit, which uses 3D laser scanning equipment to map collision scenes and build detailed models for potential court proceedings, according to Forensic Magazine. It is not yet known whether that unit is handling this particular investigation.
A Corridor With a History of Serious Wrecks
Saturday's fatal crash adds to a string of serious collisions along the Glendale Avenue corridor in recent months. Hoodline has reported on a dawn hit-and-run that left a cyclist fighting for his life on 27th Avenue just south of Glendale Avenue, and covered a separate crosswalk crash at 19th Avenue and Glendale Avenue that left a man clinging to life. The 37th Avenue and Glendale Road intersection itself was the site of a fatal crash investigation by Phoenix Police back in April 2022, according to city media advisories.
The timing of Saturday's crash also coincided with a major regional traffic disruption. The Arizona Department of Transportation had issued travel advisories for the weekend announcing westbound Loop 101 closures between 51st and 75th Avenues, a closure expected to push additional Valley traffic onto east-west surface arterials including Glendale Avenue. It remains unknown whether that detour traffic contributed to conditions at the crash scene.
Phoenix's Broader Traffic Safety Struggle
The crash lands amid a persistent local traffic safety challenge. Phoenix city safety officials reported in 2025 that the city averages roughly 200 traffic fatalities and 880 severe or life-altering injuries every year, a rate the chairman of Phoenix's Vision Zero Street Safety Committee said puts the city at roughly double the national average for pedestrian casualty increases, according to Arizona PBS. The Phoenix City Council responded to years of rising traffic casualties by unanimously approving a Vision Zero Road Safety Action Plan in 2022, committing $10 million annually toward traffic engineering, enforcement, and education with the goal of eliminating traffic deaths and severe injuries by 2050, per the City of Phoenix.
Countywide, Maricopa County recorded 594 traffic fatalities in 2024, a decline from 681 the year before, according to AZ Law Now. Statewide, ADOT's most recent Motor Vehicle Crash Facts report showed Arizona traffic deaths dipping 6.12% to 1,228 in 2024, even as Maricopa County continued to account for nearly half of all fatalities recorded across the state.
