As Maricopa students gear up for their first day back at school, so too is the Maricopa Police Department, preparing for a day of heightened traffic enforcement. Dubbed Operation Safe Start, the initiative set for July 23 is aimed at cracking down on unsafe driving around school zones. Sergeant Hal Koozer of the Maricopa Police Department leads the operation, stressing the importance of careful driving, especially as the new school year kicks off. "School zones deserve our full attention and care," he said in a statement.

During Operation Safe Start, officers from various agencies including the Maricopa Police Department (MPD), Arizona Department of Public Safety, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, Casa Grande, and Eloy, will be patrolling school zones throughout Maricopa. They will be on the lookout for drivers who are speeding, texting while driving, or engaging in other high-risk behaviors. According to a post on the city's official website, the multi-agency effort reminds drivers that maintaining safety is crucial not just during the start of the school year but consistently every day.

"We know mornings can be hectic and routines take time to settle, but that’s exactly why it’s important to plan ahead," Koozer said. He also added that it is vital to "slow down, and make safe driving decisions," acknowledging how a few extra minutes can significantly contribute to the safety of the children.

Operation Safe Start is not just a clampdown but serves as an educational effort too, aiming to hold offenders accountable while simultaneously enlightening the public about safe driving practices. "It really comes down to keeping everyone safe around our schools," Koozer explained. Whether they are parents dropping off their children, students on their way to classes, or just passing through, all motorists are urged to take heed of the traffic laws—slowing down their vehicles, keeping off their phones, and staying alert at all times.

While this initiative is a one-day event, the MPD's commitment to student safety is year-round. The department assures continued enforcement and monitoring of school zones while responding to safety concerns and promoting safe driving habits among the community. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on the MPD’s social media channels for regular updates on traffic safety, including potential roadwork or closures that could affect local travel routes. The overarching message for all of Maricopa is to prioritize the safety of its young learners and keep the streets secure for everybody throughout the entire year.
