Maricopa's youth are getting a firsthand experience of police work through the Teen Police Academy. Launched in 2020 by the Maricopa Police Department, this program provides teenagers with an immersive understanding of law enforcement practices. As reported by the City of Maricopa's official website, the Academy mimics the actual police training regimen, offering activities ranging from crime scene investigation to emergency response drills.
During the weeklong program, participants engage in an array of practical exercises. They get the hands-on opportunity to delve into techniques such as fingerprinting and shoe casting. According to a news release from the Maricopa Police Department, teens also train for real-life scenarios that include building searches and responding to staged emergencies. This experience has proven pivotal for some young participants. Hayley Braverman, a veteran with three Teen Police Academy sessions under her belt, described a mock hostage drill to the City of Maricopa's news page, expressing a high-pressure situation where “people are screaming, and it’s just so invaluable."
Aside from the practical skills, social development is another core benefit cited by the program's attendees. Braverman relays the improvement in her interpersonal skills, stating, “This really makes you get out of your shell. You learn how to talk to people you’ve never met and probably will never meet again.” Meanwhile, Landon Stowe, who aspires to a future in law enforcement, views the academy as a gateway to his career, remarking on the invaluable lessons learned from the program in a chat with the City of Maricopa's communications team.
The Teen Police Academy is a precursor to the Maricopa Police Cadet Program, another initiative aimed towards high schoolers interested in law enforcement. With meetings every Thursday, the program is currently at full capacity; however, those interested in joining the waiting list can find more information and complete an interest form through the City of Maricopa aforementioned announcement.
