Ethan Guo, a 19-year-old from Massachusetts, has found himself in the chilly grasp of Chilean authorities after an ambitious attempt to solo pilot his small plane across seven continents was abruptly halted in Antarctica. Guo, who had been documenting his journey online and aimed to raise $1 million for cancer research, was detained on King George Island after allegedly veering from his submitted flight plan, according to CBS News.
Chilean officials claimed that Guo, who had already covered ground on six continents, departed from Punta Arenas and proceeded to conduct an unauthorized flight toward Antarctic territory. Trying to become the first pilot to fly solo across all seven continents in a Cessna, Guo cited his cousin's cancer diagnosis as the inspiration behind his mission, a detail highlighted by Boston 25 News. The young aviator's journey, however, took a detour after he landed at Teniente R. Marsh Airport and was met with legal consequences.
Prosecutor Cristian Cristoso Rifo explained in a video statement that Guo is charged with violating two articles of the Chilean Aeronautical Code, one of which could lead to imprisonment or a fine for anyone landing in Chilean territory without proper authorization. "Guo departed from the airport in the city of Punta Arenas, near the southernmost point of Chile, and proceeded to conduct an unauthorized flight to King George Island," Cristoso remarked, indicating that Guo's submitted flight plan did not include the excursion to Antarctica. Furthermore, Rifo argued that the flight not only disregarded the aeronautical code but also "multiple national and international" regulations concerning access to the icy continent, according to CBS News.
The investigation into Guo's unauthorized flight is ongoing, with Chilean courts overseeing the inquiry. Guo is expected to be detained for at least 90 days while proceedings continue. He had been raising funds for cancer research through his solo flight mission.
