This morning, residents of a Portland apartment complex were awakened by the roar of a massive fire, leading to the hospitalization of two individuals. The blaze, which consumed the building on East Burnside Street, was first reported just before 6 AM, according to OregonLive. Portland Fire and Rescue swiftly dispatched over 40 units to tackle the four-alarm fire and worked intensively to bring it under control.
In an operation that saw firefighters stretching their hoses over the MAX service tracks on Burnside, obstructing the train service temporarily, eight people were rescued from the inferno. Meanwhile, in a desperate bid for survival detached from safety parameters, two residents chose to leap to safety, as detailed by KATU. Images and videos from the scene depict the severity of the fire with flames aggressively pouring out from the front of the affected structure.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and have detained one person in connection with the incident. "One person has been detained as part of the fire investigation, though not arrested," Rick Graves, a public information officer for Portland Fire & Rescue, indicated in a statement, per KGW. The individual's identity and potential role in the fire have not been disclosed.
