In a move that augments the network of community spaces across the District, Mayor Muriel Bowser has set the construction of the new Fort Davis Community Center in motion. The groundbreaking ceremony, taking place at 11 AM on Wednesday, is expected to be a gathering of District leaders and local residents. According to the Mayor's Office, the $27.5 million project is underway to deliver a modernized 28,960-square-foot community center and significant enhancements to the adjoining 4.6-acre park in Ward 7.
The community's anticipation is palpable as the revamping will see the current recreation center transform into an improved public space, chock-full of amenities. The forthcoming center is designed to include a fitness center, a full-size indoor basketball court, and an indoor walking track. Craving for community engagement and recreational activities, the neighborhood is looking forward to the new additions such as a commercial kitchen, multipurpose rooms, a game lounge, and a dance studio, tailored to foster communal ties and nourish shared experiences. Surrounding park improvements will not fall behind, featuring resurfaced tennis courts, an expanded basketball court, a refreshed picnic pavilion, a new entry plaza decked with public art, and an extended playground – touched by the hands of landscape artisans.
Mayor Bowser’s efforts to enhance the city's recreational facilities continue to be evident in this latest project. In the backdrop of a decade-long initiative, the Bowser Administration's investment surpasses the $540 million mark targeted towards revamping recreation centers, pools, and playgrounds. It is a testament to her dedication to creating enriching environments for DC's residents. Notably, these developments add to a list that includes the new Fort Lincoln Recreation Center, the recently initiated Early Childhood Education Center, and last year's unveiling of the Reservoir Park Recreation Center and Aquatic Center, coupled with a 6.2-acre park at the historic McMillan Sand Filtration Site.
