As the City of Miami faces a decisive moment in the future of the Olympia Theater, a vote by Miami commissioners is expected to settle whether the historic venue will be sold to SLAM Academy, a charter school founded by rapper Pitbull, for a nominal $10. Local 10 News unveiled a draft purchase and sale agreement indicating that the city would be transferring the property as-is, emphasizing that SLAM would be responsible for environmental inspections and any subsequent remediation.
This proposal, which stands to repurpose the distinguished Olympia Theater into an educational institution, has not been free from controversy. According to Local 10 News, former City Commissioner and current mayoral candidate Ken Russell branded the deal as a "no-bid giveaway," vocalizing concerns echoed by preservationists and community leaders about the expedited decision-making process. The deal has been met with skepticism from certain community quarters. The theater's inception dates back to 1926, and with it carries a historical and cultural significance that many feel warrants more thorough public discussion—before irreversible decisions are enacted.
In response to these concerns, Commissioner Damian Pardo, who represents the district comprising the Olympia Theater, admitted the complexities of the situation, acknowledging litigation and the involvement of multiple stakeholders such as Miami Dade College. The acquisition, if approved, would see SLAM taking over the property subject to the conditions stipulated in a resolution to be disclosed before the vote. The commissioner has also taken to social media to emphasize the city's commitment to engagement and transparency on the topic, as evidenced by a post offering answers to common questions and asserting a pledge to ongoing dialogue.
Here are some of the most common questions received by our office and their responses. We will continue posting more as we receive others. Amid the unfolding debate over the theater's destiny, reminders of Miami's relatively young history have come to the forefront. In a public demonstration, Russell expressed a sentiment shared by many residents, about the importance of preserving Miami's historic assets, saying, "You will be inspired when you walk through these doors. You’ll realize Miami can never let go of this asset, never give it away or sell it," an event captured on Miami Herald by supporters and media alike.
