In a harrowing episode for cycling enthusiasts in Miami-Dade, two accidents in close succession have spotlighted the perils riders face on the city's streets. In northwest Miami-Dade, a cyclist was airlifted to hospital after being hit by a car last night. The incident occurred on Northwest 103rd Street, near the intersection with Northwest 30th Court. According to Detective Luis Sierra of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, “While entering the intersection, a bicyclist improperly crossed NW 103rd Street and the front of the vehicle collided with the bicyclist,” as he described in an email to Local 10 News.
Struck after dark, the victim was then airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. As of yet, no further information has been released on their condition.
In an unrelated yet similarly distressing event, David Miller, a Miami cyclist, experienced a brush with mortality when a silver Corvette collided with him and then sped off. The incident took place at the intersection of Northwest 15th Road and Northwest 15th Street, just a stone's throw from Miami's bustling hospital district. Recounting his tale, Miller told CBS News Miami, "I was just going to go ride around the neighborhood. I've done that a few times."
"I remember going up, hitting the hood, feeling like glass breaking under my shoulder," Miller recounted. Despite trying to signal the driver to stop with his left hand, the car fled the scene. Thankfully, Miller walked away with minor injuries, and he urged the driver to come forward and do the right thing. The Miami Police Department is currently investigating the hit-and-run, as reported by CBS News Miami.
