Following alarming statistics on boating accidents, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava is spearheading the first Boater Safety and Bay Education Task Force Meeting in Miami-Dade County. Set for tomorrow, the gathering is a proactive measure to address the growing concern for waterway safety and environmental protection. This meeting, which also serves as the official launch of the Task Force will take place from 9 am to 12 pm at the Miami-Dade Main Public Library Auditorium.

Last year, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported a staggering 685 boating accidents and 81 fatalities statewide. In Miami-Dade County, where a significant portion of these incidents occurred, the lack of boater education has been glaring; 65% of operators in fatal accidents had no formal training. Mayor Levine Cava is taking a firm stand on this issue, declaring, "Ahead of the 2025 boating season, our County is doubling down on its commitment to protect both residents and our natural resources," in a statement provided by Miami-Dade County’s press release.

The momentum for this initiative is fueled by partnerships and community involvement. Among the task force's eight members are representatives from the Lucy Fernandez Foundation, the Monica Burguera Foundation, the Key Biscayne Community Foundation, the Office of State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, and notable figures from the boating industry.

Andres Fernandez of the Lucy Fernandez Foundation, which actively promotes boater safety and awareness, shared his commitment to the cause, “We are honored to join the Boater Safety and Bay Education Task Force, and remain deeply committed to collaborating with our elected officials and industry experts on improving boater education and safety, so that no other family has to experience such a devastating loss. We thank Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Miami-Dade County for taking this important step toward creating safer waterways and effecting meaningful change at the local level.” The task of the group is to develop a set of actionable recommendations for the Mayor that focus on education, responsible boating, and policy enforcement to cut down boating incidents and fatalities, according to the same press release.

All proceedings will be transparent, adhering to Florida's Government in the Sunshine Laws, ensuring public access to the discussions and decisions made by the task force. Once finalized, these recommendations will be presented to the Mayor’s administration to help chart a safer and more responsible boating future for the county.
