In a move to bolster Miami's role as a hub for perishable goods, a groundbreaking ceremony for a state-of-the-art phytosanitary treatment and cold chain processing facility is scheduled for Monday, July 21. The ceremony, heralded by local leaders, marks the start of construction for the first facility of its kind in Florida and the largest in the United States, as reported by the Miami-Dade County's official press release.

U.S. Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart and Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava will be among those in attendance, alongside key figures from PortMiami and Miami International Airport (MIA). This facility, located at the southwest corner of MIA, aims to enhance the region's capacity to import fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other plant-based products. It boasts advanced non-chemical treatments certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for inspecting and shielding American agriculture from pests, and diseases.

The groundbreaking event is a nod to Miami's strategic importance in international trade, particularly in the perishables sector. Stakeholders like Michael Mandich of Mandich Group, and Chip Starns from Reveam, are collaborating with the local government to develop infrastructure that accommodates the rapid inspection, and processing of imported goods, according to the same press release.

Miami-Dade County has been pushing the envelope in developing cutting-edge facilities for handling perishables. Officials, including Jimmy Morales, COO for the county, Hydi Webb, Director and CEO of PortMiami, and Ralph Cutié, Director and CEO of MIA, recognize that advancing these capabilities not only serves the region’s economic interests, but also safeguards nationwide agricultural health. The event, open for media registration starting at 9:00 a.m., invites attendees to witness the symbolic commencement of a project anticipated to drive further growth at Miami's core of international trade. Interested parties are asked to RSVP to Alfredo “Freddy” Pereira via email by Friday, July 18.
