In Milledgeville, the pyrotechnic display that was meant to draw the community together in a patriotic celebration of Independence Day instead led to communal discontent. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the fireworks show was a disappointment for those gathered at Central Georgia Technical College, ending abruptly and garnering negative reactions from expecting residents.

The company behind the errant fireworks, Freedom Fireworks, issued a statement taking full responsibility for the mishap. "We take full responsibility for the issues that occurred and understand the frustration and letdown this caused the city and many of its visitors," the president of the company wrote. Echoing the sentiment of rectification, Milledgeville's Mayor, Mary Parham-Copelan, promised a greatly improved future event, ensuring it "will be a very, very memorable one for them to come out and see so that we do make sure they come back," as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.

Freedom Fireworks has committed to refunding more than $13,000 and offering a 50% discount on future displays to address the issues from this year’s July Fourth event. City Councilmember Walter Reynolds told 13WMAZ that discussions are underway to possibly expand next year’s celebration into a full festival, which would include additional food, entertainment, and community activities alongside the fireworks display.

Milledgeville city leaders have acknowledged the issues with this year’s Fourth of July event and are working on plans to improve future celebrations. Their goal is to enhance the event and better meet community expectations in the coming years.
