A motorcyclist died last night after a collision on I-240 in Memphis, resulting in a temporary shutdown of the interstate. The incident occurred near Getwell Road, and police were called to the scene shortly after 10:30 p.m., as reported by FOX13 Memphis.
Initial investigations, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), indicated that a Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling westbound when it collided with the rear of a Jeep Grand Cherokee. “The driver lost control, fell off the motorcycle into the lanes of incoming traffic, and was run over by several vehicles,” the Memphis Police Department noted, with such details confirmed in a statement obtained by Action News 5. The motorcyclist, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
As a result of the crash, westbound traffic on I-240 was heavily affected. All lanes were closed as emergency crews worked on the scene, with diverted vehicles at Perkins Road. It wasn't until approximately 4 a.m. on Monday that lanes reopened, causing significant delays for early morning commuters. This detail was shared by WREG News, which noted that the vehicles, run over by the motorcyclist, had been in the lanes of traffic for several hours during the investigations.
