A tragic collision on Lakeshore Drive in Muskegon claimed the life of a motorcyclist yesterday after a car reportedly driven in a reckless manner, struck the motorcycle and subsequently caught fire. As reported by WOOD TV, the Muskegon Police Department identified the motorcyclist as a 40-year-old local man who was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 12:37 p.m. near Robinson Street.
The suspect, a 33-year-old man from Muskegon, was reportedly involved in a chase earlier with the authorities for an unrelated incident but was not pursued by the officers due to policy. He was later spotted quickly driving down a residential street, according to Chief Tim Kozal, and his vehicle eventually flipped into a bike path and caught fire after the fatal collision with the motorcyclist.
Christy Jibson, a resident of the area who provided a statement obtained by WOOD TV, expressed the collective fear of the community by saying, "It's scary. It really is scary when things like this happen. People don't realize, you know, this is a 30-mile-an-hour road … it's a well-traveled road with people walking and people riding bikes. It's just not a place to be zooming around."
Another local business owner, Mark Flermoen, voiced his frustration to WZZM 13 about the chronic speeding issues in the city and the tragic consequences it can lead to. He urged the community to "Slow down if you're watching this, slow down city-wide, because it could be your kid next." The Muskegon Police Department continues to investigate the cause of the crash and is requesting anyone with information to come forward to aid in the investigation.
The suspect, after attempting to flee the scene, was captured and arrested. The police confirmed that speed was a significant factor in the incident. As the investigation proceeds, the authorities have extended their condolences to all affected by the tragedy, according to a statement obtained by FOX 17.
