Roadway incidents involving large trucks caused significant disruptions on I-40 in Roane County, as reported by local authorities and covered by regional news stations this week. A semi driving on I-40 struck a bridge barrier and crashed onto SR 58, also known as Gallaher Road, leading to the road's closure for several hours on Wednesday, WVLT News reported.
Late that same day, all lanes of I-40 East near Kingston were shut down due to a multi-vehicle crash at Mile Marker 359.8, with a reopening time early Thursday morning. According to WBIR, emergency crews were dispatched to handle the aftermath of the crash, which caused debris to scatter on the road and adjacent grass.
In a separate incident on the same overpass in Roane County, an overturned dump truck filled with sand landed on Gallaher Road, compounding traffic issues in the area. "Please avoid Gallaher Road at Interstate 40 overpass, exit 356," stated a social media post from the Roane County Sheriff's Office, which was involved in handling the incident along with the Tennessee Highway Patrol and Kingston PD, as noted by WATE.
The series of road mishaps signifies a challenging week for Roane County traffic flow, with lengthy cleanup and investigations expected. "This will be a lengthy cleanup and investigation process," Kingston Police Department wrote, advising the community to "Stay safe and plan an alternate route." The Tennessee Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the semi crash, while the driver's condition from the initial incident remains unspecified.
Respective agencies worked diligently to manage and reopen the affected roadways as efficiently as possible. Concluding the day's events, the re-opening of SR 58 was confirmed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation following the semi crash, restoring some semblance of normalcy to an otherwise chaotic day on the roads of Roane County.
