A 16-year-old driver is now facing grave charges following a severe car crash that occurred on Briley Parkway this past Monday evening. The Nashville Metropolitan Police reported that the teenager was arrested this afternoon, after being discharged from the hospital, and charged with multiple counts, including vehicular assault and reckless endangerment.
Details of the incident suggest that the young driver lost control of the GMC Yukon at a curve while traveling westbound, only to jump the opposite exit ramp, and subsequently hit an embankment, which led the vehicle to flip. This unfortunate turn of events resulted in critical injuries to two of the five passengers, all teenagers, while the others sustained injuries deemed non-life-threatening. Even as the youths were rushed to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, it was clear that some of them were to carry the weight of this mishap far longer than others.
The consequences of the crash still resonate as the six teens are now confronted with a stark reality that started from an apparently impaired decision behind the wheel. In addition to the charges mentioned, officials disclosed that a blood sample was taken from the teen driver at the hospital to determine the cause of impairment, which seems to further complicate the charges against him.
Now charged in Juvenile Court with three counts of vehicular assault and two counts of felony reckless endangerment, the young driver must contend with consequences far greater than any 16-year-old should have to face. The weight of these charges aims not only to possibly course-correct a young life but also to send a clear message about the unforgiving nature of irresponsible driving. As the community reflects on this incident, it is hoped, perhaps vainly, that this might also serve to better ensure the safety of our youngest drivers on the road.
