A woman has been charged in connection to the tragic death of a Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) worker who was struck and killed on Interstate 65 last year. The worker, identified as Raymon Cruz-Sanchez, was part of a crew picking up trash along the highway when the accident occurred on August 16, 2024. Despite wearing a safety vest and working near a well-marked trailer, Cruz-Sanchez succumbed to his injuries two months later.
According to the official release by the Nashville Police Department, Brittany Bishop was the driver of the vehicle involved in the incident. Bishop, 27, reported having a mechanical issue with her 2013 Hyundai Azera that caused it to swerve unexpectedly. However, the data recorder from the car suggested she then overcorrected, which ultimately resulted in Cruz-Sanchez becoming pinned between her car and the trash trailer.
Investigations have led to charges against Bishop for failing to yield, which is considered to have directly led to the worker's death. The scene of the accident was reported to have been clearly marked, with Cruz-Sanchez outfitted in his reflective gear and the trailer's safety features activated. "Based on the investigation, it appears that Bishop did not exercise due care/ failed to yield, resulting in Cruz-Sanchez’ death," stated the police report.
