As New Orleans grapples with extreme heat, city officials are stepping up to help residents find relief from the swelter. With temperatures threatening to hit a "feels like" high between 110 and 115 degrees early this week, the National Weather Service has highlighted the urgent need for cool sanctuaries. In response, the City of New Orleans has set up a tool for locals to beat the heat.
Residents can access the NOLA Ready Heat Relief Map, which is an interactive guide available online, mapping out a network of air-conditioned public spaces. These locations are free, indoor, and open to the public, offering a respite from the stifling outdoor conditions. City officials urge, "Individuals in need of heat relief should check the map for up-to-date cooling center information."
The initiative comes at a critical time as the combination of high temperatures and humidity ratchets up the risk of heat-related illnesses. Cooling centers are a vital resource, especially for the city's vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and those without access to air conditioning.
