On Tuesday, a fire broke out at the Cocke County Highway Department building in Newport, engulfing the facility that reportedly housed explosive materials. Mayor Rob Mathis confirmed the incident was under control later that day and emphasized that there had been no reported injuries. WVLT reported that despite the presence of propane tanks and other hazardous materials, all individuals at the facility were accounted for. The news of the blaze also prompted the precautionary evacuation of a nearby Keurig Dr. Pepper plant.
According to 6 News, the building caught fire was also previously damaged during Hurricane Helene and was awaiting repairs. Responding agencies, including the Newport City Fire Department and volunteer fire departments, were thanked by Mayor Mathis, who was quoted saying, "We are incredibly thankful to the County Fire Department, Newport City Fire Department, and all of our Volunteer Fire Departments, County Sheriff , City Police, and other responders who rushed to the scene."
The situation prompted a strong response from emergency services, with multiple agencies joining forces to contain the fire and ensure public safety. The Cocke County Highway Department, situated along Lower Quarry Road, is in close proximity to the Pigeon River and Cityview Drive, an area Mayor Mathis urged the public to avoid while smoke persisted and responders wrapped up their operations on site, as per 6 News.
Following the fire's containment, evacuees were allowed to return to their homes and nearby workplaces. "Thankfully, everyone is safe and accounted for," Mayor Mathis expressed in relief after the incident. This stark contrast to the smoldering remains observed post-blaze was noted in coverage by WBIR, underscoring the severity of the incident.
