Last Thursday, the Oakland Police Department's Alcohol Beverage Action Team (ABAT), along with other California state agencies, conducted a raid that led to the arrest of an individual at an unlicensed smoke shop in East Oakland. The intervention, which was a response to community concerns, netted an illegal assault weapon, a handgun, marijuana, untaxed cigarettes, and flavored tobacco products, as reported by the City of Oakland.
Residents in the 3500 block of Foothill Boulevard had highlighted suspicious activities at the shop, prompting the ABAT's response. The bust was part of a coordinated enforcement action that included the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) and the California Department of Public Health's Food and Drug Branch (CDPH). Officials indicate that the cross-agency effort was crucial in the success of this operation, and an illegal assault weapon and other contraband were seized.
According to authorities, one suspect is now facing charges, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office is handling the case. The Oakland City Attorney's Office will pursue civil charges and likely initiate eviction proceedings against the tenants who operated the smoke shop.
The California Department of Justice backed the operation under the auspices of the Proposition 56 Grant. The OPD has emphasized its dedication to community safety and reinforcing the bonds of trust with Oakland residents. As part of their ongoing commitment, the OPD is urging the public to continue reporting any unlawful activities related to the sales of tobacco products, especially those involving minors, to the ABAT Complaint Hotline.
