The residents of Ogden have been battling an unrelenting stench emanating from an abandoned meat shop in their neighborhood. After enduring months of the repugnant odor, local officials commenced an investigation into the source on Tuesday. According to FOX 13 Now, the abandoned Mountain West Meats establishment has become the epicenter of complaints from the community.
Neighbors initially perceived the shop's closure as temporary, but by Memorial Day, the stench had escalated to unbearable levels, besieging the Lindsey family and forcing others to stay indoors. Attempting to live through summer, a backyard campout for the Lindsey family was quickly cut short when they were overwhelmed by the odor. "We just couldn’t stomach the smell… There’s flies everywhere," the Lindsey family recounted in an interview with KSLTV. Despite reaching out to the owner, who briefly returned to dispose of a garbage can full of rotting meat, the issue persisted when he never returned.
The smell's persistence has not only infringed upon the daily lives of Ogden residents but also their health and happiness. "I suffer from depression. Seasonal depression is the worst for me. So come summertime, I want to be out with my family… I want to feel like myself again. And you can’t do it," said a resident, as obtained by KSLTV.
Ogden City officials began receiving complaints in late June, culminating in a day when, inundated with calls, they discovered the fly infestation and the decaying perishables inside the building. As a sign of relief, residents greeted the odor advisory that the city issued, eager for change. Hoping they tear it all down, Travis Lindsey expressed the inappropriateness of such a business in their neighborhood, according to KUTV. While the legal proceedings and potential fines remain in flux, the city acknowledged the abandonment of the property but could not provide details concerning the ownership dilemma.
