Detroit is reeling from a violent encounter this morning at a local Marathon gas station, where a gunman opened fire, resulting in one fatality and three injuries. The incident occurred at the corner of Puritan Avenue and Fairfield Street on the city's west side, where, according to WWJ Newsradio, an armed individual entered the gas station at around 4 a.m. and began shooting amidst a dispute over buying snacks for female customers.
Officers from the 12th Precinct responded to reports of the shooting and, upon arrival, discovered one man in his 30s deceased. Three women were also wounded during the incident, two of them in their 30s and one in her late 20s. FOX 2 Detroit reports that the injuries to the women are considered non-life-threatening.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, with police still piecing together the events leading up to the fatal gunfire. The shooter is currently at large, and law enforcement officials are combing through security footage from the gas station in the hope of identifying the assailant. The Detroit Police Department is urgently calling on members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in this ongoing investigation.
In a personal account of the terrifying ordeal, Teonna Gray told WXYZ, "I ducked behind the car that I was coming out of, then people started running out, one of those people wasn't my friend. I went back, I told him to stop because everyone wanted to scatter and everybody was scattering. One girl said she was coming out, she held her abdomen, she said she was hit, and I said 'she's not out', so I went back in and she was in the aisle and on her stomach." Gray and her friend had visited the gas station for cigarettes and lemonade, with the shooting unfolding while her friend was at the ATM. Gray expressed a somber plea for the shooter to take responsibility for the "senseless" act.
