The city of Ciudad Juárez has been thrown into turmoil following the grim discovery of 383 uncremated bodies in a local crematorium. According to FOX8, the bodies were found stacked on top of each other, some potentially for years. This has led to families fearing that they might have received counterfeit ashes of their deceased relatives. Charged with improper disposal of a cadaver, arrested were the owner of Crematorio Plenitud and an employee, as stated in the report.
As the investigation continues, outraged citizens are gathering and seeking clarity. Elena Ciprian Fuentes, a widow questioning the authenticity of the ashes given to her, told FOX8, "I feel pain because I don’t know if he’s there or not." These sentiments are echoed throughout the deeply affected community, as seen by hundreds arriving at a Juarez police station, filled with doubt about the fate of their loved ones.
A mother named Josefina Núñez carries her burden, doubting whether the remains she received are genuinely those of her daughter, who passed in 2020. "There's a feeling of pain because you just don't know if they're really there or not," she disclosed in an interview with KFOX-TV. These families are forced to reopen wounds once thought to have begun healing, grappling with the notion that their loved ones' final rites may have been mishandled.
Moving forward, demands for justice are sharpening, with the director of the Paso del Norte Human Rights Center, A.C., calling for a thorough investigation. The Chihuahua Attorney General, Cesar Jauregui Moreno, confirmed that the bodies have been improperly stored since March 2022, as reported by El Paso Times. State authorities aim to shed light on the scandal involving the Plenitud crematorium and the five funeral homes it served.
