A major accident involving an overturned tractor-trailer has led to the closure of critical junctions on both I-40 and I-24, causing significant delays in downtown Nashville. The incident, occurring on a bustling Friday morning, triggered an extensive emergency response as crews scrambled to manage the scene and reroute traffic. As reported by WKRN, a tractor-trailer traveling east on I-40 rolled over, broke through the guardrail, and came to rest in the westbound lanes.
The driver sustained minor injuries in the crash and was transported to the hospital. According to a statement obtained by WSMV, the rig was hauling electrical transformers, which are now leaking oil onto the roadway. The Nashville Fire Department (NFD) HAZMAT team was called to the scene to contain the spill, involving approximately 150 gallons of diesel fuel. The hazardous materials team worked swiftly to mitigate further environmental impact posed by the leaking oil.
With the I-65 South ramp also closed, Metro Nashville Police Department is actively redirecting traffic at the Spence Lane exit off I-40 West to relieve the area from congestion. Commuters were advised to seek alternate routes such as 70 or 41. FOX 17 detailed that the crash took place near Spence Lane, around mile marker 211, near the Nissan Stadium and Fesslers Lane exits.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation has given an initial estimation that the roads would be cleared by noon, with efforts underway to open at least a single lane to traffic as early as possible. However, due to the complex nature of the crash and necessary cleanup, this timeline could be subject to change. Commuters were expected to face major delays throughout the morning and potentially into the afternoon hours as this critical artery into downtown Nashville remains partially obstructed.
