A significant highway incident this past Saturday has led to hours of traffic disruption on I-40 in Sevier County, as reported by local news outlets. The accident involved an overturned vehicle which necessitated the closure of all eastbound lanes near mile marker 408.8.
The emergency unfolded just before 2:30 p.m. when first responders, including WVLT, reported to the scene, and the area remained inaccessible until the late evening when the Sevierville Police Department confirmed all lanes had reopened around 9:30 p.m. This caused congestion, also affected the westbound traffic, which saw extensive backup approaching the scene. Although the initial cause and details of the crash or any injuries have not been disclosed, this incident resulted in an extended closure that disrupted the flow of traffic for many hours and led to a considerable detour for drivers traveling through the area.
Compounding the situation, the Sevierville Police Department, via a social media post, notified the public of a brush fire just west of the accident site, further advising drivers to avoid the affected area entirely.

The aftermath of the crash saw a collaborative effort from various departments, including the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and LIFESTAR, which was captured responding to the scene via TDOT SmartWay camera footage; the entire eastbound corridor was engulfed in emergency response efforts and vehicle recovery operations, which painted a landscape of stark standstill on what is usually a flowing vein of commerce and connectivity, according to information shared by WBIR. While crews labored to clear the area and attend to the mishap, the ripple effects of the incident spanned many miles, illustrating just how swiftly a single event can paralyze a transport artery crucial to the daily ebb and flow of travelers and trade.
